Getting and keeping beautiful hands

Dry skin. Some of us are winter suffers only. Others seem to have dry skin year-round. And of course the climate in which you live in makes a big difference.

But there is no reason to suffer. A little extra nightly care and attention before you sleep will go a long way to making the skin on your hands feel young and supple again.

The number one skin care advice for hands is to buy several pairs of thin all-cotton gloves (available in packs of 5 or 10 from your pharmacy). Slather your hands with a good hand cream every night before slipping them on and wearing them while you sleep.

To keep cuticles soft and abandon the need of purchasing cuticle remover, massage a small dollop of vaseline into each nail bed before sleeping.

When you next buy hand cream, buy four bottles instead of your usual one. Place one in your handbag, one on your night stand, one by the kitchen sink, and one in your office drawer. Now there's no excuse not to rub cream into your hands at least a couple of times a day and always after washing your hands.

Avoid using harsh soaps. Use instead a quality liquid handsoap. They are less messy and a little goes a long way.

Use rubber gloves when dealing with anything remotely related to housework. Contact with cleaning fluids is the number one cause of dry, flakey skin.

Don't forget to use your sunscreen on your hands when you go out. Skin cancers on the backs of hands and forearms are common. And always wear soft gloves in cold winter weather.

Keep nails bright and glossy by buffing them regularly and applying a clear coat of nail strengthner. By avoiding dark nail polishes, you let the natural sunlight reach your nails keeping them pink and healthy.
