Tips and tricks on makeup that helps you stay looking young

Gone are the old images of faces caked with thick foundations and matted powders that, while covering spots and blotches, make a face look old, dull and accentuate lines.

Modern makeup is all about skin glowing, lines diffused, and subtle luminosity. And here are some cool tricks of the trade to help you achieve just that.

First, if want want a subtle, sunny glow year-round, why not mix a blob of your face moisturizer with a tiny bit of your fake tan and apply every other morning. Wait 5 minutes before applying makeup.

Choose a foundation that gives a medium weight coverage but also includes ingredients that give skin a gentle glow without be shiny. Look out for words such as "luminous", "radiant", and "dewy". These light pigments in the foundation actually reflect light off of your face and makes lines and wrinkles less obvious.

Choose a liquid concealer that contains the same ingrediants. There are some on the market that are quite magical. To figure out where you need concealer, just look in the mirror then nod your head down and look at the floor. Look back up at the mirror with eyes only - and hey presto! - see those shadows? that where it goes.

If you have lines around your eyes, the worse thing you can do is to press powder around your eye. The powder settles into small cracks in your skin making them more obvious. Using a finger, lightly dust powder onto your eyelid only to give eyeshadow some staying power. Use a foundation stick or a foundation-loaded Q-tip or concealer to touch up the area under your eye during the day if needed, but keep the powder away from this area!

A sheer face powder with some subtle glimmery particles will add to the vision of luminosity. Always, always apply powder with a puff. Using a brush makes skin look tired and dusty. Press the powder into your face instead and just brush off excess.

Always use a lip liner in exactly the same shade as your lipstick. It will stop feathering. Apply a sheer lipstick, or your regular lipstick with a light, non-sticky gloss over the top. Lips that aren't heavily matted look younger and fresher. Never, ever buy a lipstick without first trying it on your lips. Apply some from a sample tube onto your finger and spread it over your lips. Colors can look deceptive in the tube.

Do remember to keep your eyebrows shaped and groomed. Apply a soft pencil eyebrow color for definition. Choose a shimmery one to give a light sheen to your brows. The difference in the way you look is amazing. Make sure the pencil is sharp for definition (place pencil in the fridge for a few minutes before sharpening it to stop breakages).

Even if you choose to go without eyemakeup (is there anyone out there?), makeup your eyebrows for a sleek and polished look to your face. In fact light foundation, eyebrow pencil, blush, lipgloss and a slick of black mascara is all that is needed to make a face look polished. But feel free to continue with more.

Remember, there is a difference between looking shiny and looking luminous. You need to look for the right products. And they're not hard to find, virtually every makeup range has the magic ingrediants in at least some of their products.
