Water aerobics - for health and beauty

Water aerobics is pretty much like regular aerobics - but you are exercising in the water.

There are several important advantages to water aerobics compared to regular aerobics. Most importantly, water aerobics gives you a better work-out with less pressure on knees and joints.

As I see it, if you are looking to get fit and loose some weight, there are five main advantages to water aerobics:

Water provides buoyancy and support

Does it sound like water aerobics is only for the elderly?

Forget it. Water aerobics is ideal for young and old, and for people that are fit as well as unfit. The water surrounding your body provides buoyancy and support and helps you to comfortably workout at your ideal pace without feeling like an elephant.

Water helps out with excercises

Don't you hate going to a regular aerobics class only to find that you cannot do the overly complicated excersises. You are told to "jump, twirl and spin", all at the same time. (And yes, that is one exercise). You just can't keep up.

Water aerobics is a much nicer alternative. The water around your body provides buoyancy during difficult excersises. And if you fall, don't worry, the landing is very pleasant.

And at times, some us do like to feel that our body is shielded from full view by the water......

And furthermore, water aerobics is the perfect workout for people with no rythmn or co-ordination. Believe me, I know.

Water provides more resistance

Sure, some people excersise because it is fun and healthy. But most of us do like the idea of burning a few calories.

Water aerobics gives a great workout promoting both muscular endurance and tone. The secret lies in the water providing more resistance than air. But since the increased resistance is both "soft and flexible" you do not have to worry about stress related injuries.

My favourite, the water is cooling

Although the water tends to hold about 80 degrees fahrenheit, you will find that the water has a cooling effect even during the hardest of workouts.

My next favourite - the water hides and shields

Sure, we are all beautiful and we should indeed be proud of our bodies.

But for some of us it does feel nice to know that the water hides our bodies during awkward excerises and strange positions. During water aerobics I do not have to worry about how I look. And because of it, I have a better time.

Interested in trying water aerobics?

If you are interested in trying water aerobics, I recommend you contact your nearest swimming club. And as always, do check with your medical doctor before undertaking any excercise.
